Before rapid tourism development, coastal communities in Nusa Penida were mainly engaged in seaweed farming and fishing. Coastal residents worked as a seaweed farmer and fisherman while hillside dwellers were mostly farmers, raising cattle, planting cassava, corn, etc. Lack of education and knowledge among fisherman often led to the capture of turtle for consumption, but currently no fisherman dare to capture them due to their protected status well publicized  by the authority or government.

Nusa Penida’s relatively small island limits tourism activities, but visiting Nusa Penida is a must for snorkeling to witness the beauty of the underwater world at various snorkeling locations.
